Welcome to our newsletter! The fire-siege of Summer 2008 will be long remembered. The Summer of Smoke (aka SOS or the year without a summer) has been a challenge for those effected, and we are heartened that most of the fires are smoldering out. We want to thank you for your support this summer! Like myself, many of you were stuck indoors avoiding the smoke and used the time to work on projects. Thanks to all of our busy quilters, we had a great summer and the store is doing well.

Just a reminder to print the coupons and keep them with you—don’t miss out on great deals! Most of our discounts and sales are exclusives for our newsletter subscribers, a way to reward our loyal customers. If you forget your coupon at home, however, just let me know when you check out—if you are on the newsletter list we know you have one (somewhere)!

Beat the afternoon heat and join us on Saturday, September 6 at 2PM for a trunk show and sale of great batik sarong fabric. This unique, handmade fabric is not available at any other quilt shop! Bridget selects these fabrics at the open market on the island of Bali, and she always brings fabulous patterns well suited to creating quilts and clothing. See examples that day of some of the items you can make with these one-of-a-kind prints. We will even have some Balinese snacks for you.

We are trying a new feature this fall: a mini-retreat in October! Held here at the shop to keep your costs down, you can devote all your effort to finishing projects for the holidays. Delicious meals will be catered and you can return home in the evening (saves motel fees!) You can get a lot done in two days with no distractions. No dishes, no phones, no stinkin’ housework—just two days devoted to creating beautiful quilts. It will be productive fun, and we will be here to help.

Autumn in the Alps Quilt Show on October 4

Saturday, October 4th is the day we have been waiting for. The Autumn in the Alps Quilt Show is a one-day, outdoor quilt show that spans the historic district in Weaverville—a quarter mile of quilts!

This show is growing in size and prestige each year, and 2008 will be no exception. Along with all of our favorite features (such as the museum bed turning, the vendor’s meadow and the great live music) there will be new activities to entertain and enchant. Don't forget to submit your special quilts for judging--there are 4 categories and a variety of cash & prizes.

First of all, we expect over 400 quilts this year! This will set a new record for us, so empty your closets and give all those beautiful quilts an airing and share them with show-goers. The more the merrier! Pick up quilt tags at our shop or download from the show website. Bring in display quilts anytime between Oct 1-3 to the shop.

Secondly, the show is reorganizing how it judges and gives awards—quilts to be judged must now be turned in one week before the show. Judging takes place the weekend before the show so that winners can be displayed for all to appreciate and featured in the newspaper. Also, new awards for junior quilters will acknowledge the talent of our youngest quilters.

The biggest new feature this year is a quilt auction coordinated by the Log Cabin Quilters of Hayfork. This is your chance to own a one-of-a-kind work of quilt art! Each year I hear the call "Where are the quilts for sale?". This year folks will get their wish, with dozens of quilts to choose from. Have a quilt you want to auction? Contact Marynel Merris or call at 628-4288 for more information on how to participate.

Quilt appraisals by Laurie Short will be available at the Congregational Church Parish Hall next to the Highland Meadow. Cost of appraisals is only $20 and appraisals take approximately 15 minutes each. Call Janet Taylor at 623-4410 to schedule an appointment

This show is sponsored by the Thursday Night Strippers Quilt Guild. How does this little guild do it? All of the quilters in Trinity help out! This is truly a county-wide effort, with guilds across the county helping to make this special day possible.

YOU can be part of the show, too. Volunteers are welcome, and help is especially needed to hang the show in the morning and take down the quilts in the afternoon. Other jobs include serving a shift at the welcome booth or working as “white-glove” hosts. Call 623-6454 to sign up or get more information.

Visit the Quilt Show website at www.shasta.com/suesgoodco/quilts for more information on the show and a schedule of activities. See you there!

Quick Reference on Quilt Show Dates and Deadlines:

Block of the Month - "Pieceful Nights" by Lori Smith

You'll love this quilt! Destined to become a family heirloomThanks for you enthusiasm for this BOM! This BOM was full, but we currently have 2 spaces open! If you live out of the area and want to participate, we are always happy to mail your blocks to you (postage extra--approx $2.50 per month). Cost of this BOM is $13.95 per block or $11.95 per block if paid in advance ($140 plus tax).

BOM members who pick up their packets the day it is released (2nd Saturday) get 15% off their entire purchase in the store that day. What a deal!. We will add additional sales and goodies just for BOM members each month. This is really going to be fun!

“Piecefull Nights”, designed by Lori Smith, is a lovely quilt featuring traditional style blocks. We will be using Civil War reproduction prints in indigo blue, lancaster blue, red, rust, and brown on a muslin backgrond to make this great design. The quilt will feature prints from Old Glory III by Windham, as well as fabrics by Henry Glass and Marcus Brothers--all first quality, new release fabrics. Don’t miss this chance to make your own heirloom quilt.

Sew Green

We all know it is a good thing to bring our own shopping bags—it saves money, resources and is good for the environment. It is also ever-so-stylish! So why is it so hard to remember to bring the bag into the store with me?

We’ve come up with an incentive to help you remember that bag. Every customer who brings their own shopping bag into the store will be entered into a monthly drawing for a $20 gift certificate! We want to reward you for your Earth-friendly efforts.

Don’t have a reusable shopping bag yet? Come into the store and we will give you a free pattern for making your own great shopping bag. It's quick, easy and a great way to utilize your stash, and you can make thrifty use of orphan blocks or scraps to create pockets. We have scheduled two sessions of classes on September 13 to help get you started.

Halloween is coming up, so wouldn't a nice, reusable Trick or Treat bag in spooky prints instead of plastic buckets or bags send a nice message to your kids? Little ghosts and goblins can use them each year to gather and store their treats.

Uncommon Threads

Our newest addition to the shop is Presencia threads and embroidery floss. For over 50 years, the Presencia Hilaturas and Finca brands have been available to Europe, Australia & South America. Presencia is based in Valencia, Spain and offers a complete line of threads. All Presencia and Finca cotton threads are 100% Egyptian long staple cotton; wash-safe and bleach-safe, and have a particularly high luster. They are substantial in fiber and smooth and inspiring to the touch.

Presencia USA was founded in 2002 to bring this superlative European product line to the United States and its territories. In independent tests, Presencia threads test as good or better than the industry leader, and at a fraction of the cost.

Presencia thread is 50/3 (50 weight, 3 ply-the strongest sewing thread) and comes in 190 colors. The 6-ply floss is available in 256 colors and is stored in a dandy set of drawers that protect them from light and dust. I’ve posted a DMC-Presencia and an Anchor-Presencia conversion chart by the drawers for your convenience.

Tie One On Day

The day before Thanksgiving (November 26th this year), is “Tie One On Day” and women across the country will be celebrating by wrapping a loaf of bread in an apron and tucking a prayer or a note of encouragement in the pocket—and then delivering the bundle to someone in need of physical or spiritual sustenance—or both.

We love this new tradition! Look for a plethora of Apron classes and projects in November. Even if you don’t participate in "Tie one on Day", aprons make great gifts for holiday hostesses. Also in November and December, we will have classes for a variety of quick goodies for giftgiving, such as pillowcases and totes. Watch for more info in the next newsletter and on our calendar page.

Read a Good Book Lately?

Sometimes it’s just too hot in the summer to work on a quilt. The answer is to spend some time with a great new quilting book! While relaxing by the lake or river, get some inspiration from the great quilts and patterns to be found in books. You can spend the summer hours happily planning your winter project.

To make getting your book even nicer, we have a great sale on books. For one week only, October 20-25, you can stock up on books at 35% off and find inspiration on each page.

And the Winner Is...

Congratulations to e-newsletter reader Terri Sartain of Trinity Center & Auburn, the first to correctly reply to our email clues. She won a $25 gift certificate. Each email issue contains a chance to win!

Quilt Quote

Quilt Quote: “Indigenous as Vermont maple sugar, picturesque as a split-rail fence in Appalachia, dignified as a New England sea captain’s mansion, romantic as the white-pillared plantation houses of the deep South, patchwork is uniquely interwoven with the story of America.” Lenice Ingram Bacon, American Patchwork Quilts
