Meet the Staff
Sue
Rhodes, Co-Owner & Manager, began creating her own clothing
by age 8. Sue learned to love sewing from her mother and grandmother,
both professional textile workers. In high school, she became interested
in theatrical costuming and advanced her studies at Moorpark
College and the Pacific Conservatory
of Performing Arts. She worked as a Costumer at live theaters in
the Bay Area, then for Designers in the theater and film industries.
She also studied textile conservation and works as a Curator of Textiles.
Sue is passionate about history, especially the history of costume &
textiles!
Sue created an online guide for costuming living historians:
Fanny &
Vera's Guide for Reenactors and coordinated the "Threads
of History" Textile Conservation Project at the Jake
Jackson Museum. She still loves to play "dress up" and
can be found teaching history in the first person, dressed in the fashions
of many periods of American History. She loves to quilt and specializes
in recreating antique quilts from reproduction fabrics
Brenda
Houston, Co-Owner, Buyer & Instructor, started sewing as a child,
learning the skill from her mother and grandmother. She still enjoys
creating her own fashions and sharing her considerable skill with others.
In 1987 she moved to Weaverville and began quilting. She
was self-taught, but learned some great techniques at Linda
Ballard retreats. Her favorite quilts are star designs and simple
patterns that highlight fabulous fabrics.
Quilting is a family affair in the Houston household,
husband Allen and daughters Kristen, Sharon, Nancy & Jackie all
create quilts. Brenda is a Paralegal at Wilkins, Underwood & Johnson.
When she is not teaching classes, she loves to select great fabrics
for the shop.
Visit Brenda's Blog at http://thefishmanswife.blogspot.com/
to read about her adventures in quilting.
Cindy
Andrews, Instructor & Assistant Manager, is the smiling face
that greets you at Textile Traditions. Cindy began sewing at age 6,
taught by her mother on a treadle sewing machine. She loves art, especially
textile arts and has an Associate of Arts Degree from Shasta College.
An accomplished painter, she also loves the challenges
of "painting" with fabric. Her award-winning quilts are a
source of joy to all and verify her skills in the quilting art. Cindy
teaches quilting for church and community groups and has inspired many
to take up the quilter's art. Cindy's favorite quilts are based on traditional
patterns, and she loves to teach classes at the shop.
Victoria
Vallieres, Designer & Assistant Manager, started sewing in
Jr. High School Home Ec, so by High School she had alot of fabric scraps
and decided to try quilting. She was hooked on quilting and eventually
had a business, Miner Street Blues in Yreka, making patchwork clothing
& doing alterations on a treadle sewing machine.
Her award-winning quilts reflect her expertise in hand
sewing--all of her quilts are hand-quilted! We have fun watching Vicky
design new quilts, and the creative process she goes through. Watch
for more beautiful creations, patterns & kits from this talented
quilt designer.
Madeline
Holven, Business Assistant & Instructor, recently graduated
Trinity High School and is planning a career in fashion design. She
is inspired by the Gothic movement in clothing and lifestyle and enjoys
working with a darker palette. She plans to attend Sacramento City College
to study art & fashion design.
She shares her projects and designs with others at her
"Dark Threads" crafting club at Textile Traditions. This group
designs and creates their own unique fashions as well as items of home
decor. Madeline enjoys exploring creative and trendy techniques, such
as duct-tape fashions and clothing "deconstruction". You will
always see Maddy dressed in exciting fashions, reflecting the dark,
dreamy, romantic lifestyle she loves.
Meghan
Rhodes, Business Assistant, recently graduated Trinity High School
and works doing data entry and bookkeeping at Textile Traditions. She
brings order to our creative chaos and helps keep us down-to-earth when
we get carried away.
Our token non-quilter, Meghan writes short stories, screenplays
and novels in the genre of fantasy, science fiction and horror/mystery.
She has a loyal following of fans at her fan-fiction web site, all of
who can't wait for the next chapter of a story to be posted. She plans
to take college courses to hone her writing craft and we look forward
to seeing her adventure stories in print.
Sharon
Houston, Business Assistant, recently graduated Trinity High
School and works doing store maintenance, data entry and bookkeeping
at Textile Traditions. Sharon attends nearby Shasta College where she
is taking agriculture and art courses.
Sharon also loves to craft stories in the genre of fantasy,
science fiction and horror/mystery and has several stories in the works.
She and Meghan have collaborated on some great stories and look forward
to being published. We expect great things in the future from this talented
writer and future farmer.
